I joined the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation in 1984 as a Linehandler. I then received training that allowed to me to operate the structures and was promoted to relief Lock Master. After that, through a combination of field experience and additional education, I worked my way up to the position of Operations Shift Coordinator.
Throughout my career, the SLSMC has given me a variety of interesting challenges. In my opinion, the organization distinguishes itself by the extraordinary pace of technological change in the last five years. We have integrated new technology such as hydraulic equipment and H.M.I.’s (Human machine interfaces) into the existing infrastructure that had been designed based on existing structures. This new technology works perfectly; it’s s a true testament to the people employed here.

After my 20-year career as an electromechanic, which was an enriching experience, I joined the SLSMC in August of 2007. I occupy the role of Canal Service Technician.
My work combines the roles of lock operator and electrician. As lock operator, I proceed with the mooring of ships and the operation of structures. As electrician, I work in the installation, repair, maintenance, inspection and diagnosis of the electrical control systems, using measuring instruments and electronic devices. After the closure of the navigation season, I work with the electrical maintenance group on several projects until the opening of navigation. This year, I participated in the project to renew the electrical control systems at locks 3 and 4 in Beauharnois. It was a very gratifying experience.
The company commits to the fundamental values of its employees. It offers in-house training and encourages employees to constantly improve with the aim of creating an environment of success.![]()

Immediately after obtaining my Master’s degree in Computer Science, I was hired as an E-Business Specialist in 2002. It was my first job in Canada.
On the whole, my job consists of supporting two websites for Seaway: www.greatlakes-seaway.com and www.hwyh2o.com. I work with a small team and my work has great variety. It includes web server maintenance, system monitoring, system backup, security issues, database administration, java programming, webpage design, web content updating, and email broadcasting.
I work at the head office in Cornwall. Cornwall provides a quality of life I couldn’t find elsewhere. What I like most is the lack of traffic. It just takes me 10 minutes to drive to work, 10 minutes for shopping, and 10 minutes to go fishing!
